Have you ever heard of a Möbius?

The Möbius strip (the infinity symbol) was created by the German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858. In mathematics, a Möbius band, strip, or loop, is a surface with only one side and only one boundary curve.

In the world of knitting this means that we can create a cowl, without joining the short ends of a rectangle. The famous Cat Bordhi möbius cast on is a method whereby we use one long circular needle formed into two rings like tramlines. Once the cast on is completed, we continue to knit and the work grows from the centre.

Now all this may sound like a complete mystery to you. The theory does to me too! Basically it's magic! We create this cowl with a twist in it and it is so different to a cowl just knitted straight, in the round or flat. We could of course just knit a scarf (rectangle), twist it and sew the ends together, but hey! where's the fun in that?

So with this in mind, I have used a special lacy pattern for my new möbius cowl, so whichever way you wear it, the pattern is (almost) identical. There is no right or wrong side to the knitting.

Within the PDF, I've added a link to Cat Bordhi's excellent YouTube video for the cast on. After this, the pattern is easy and quick.

If you've not started knitting for winter gifts, birthdays or Christmas, then why not start with this gorgeous Möbius. Most people I know, once they've knitted one möbius, they want to make more. They make a fabulous gift and go like hot cakes at a craft fair.
